Things I would never do as an aesthetics practitioner

Filler in my Glabella

The glabela is the region found between the eyebrows, just above the nose. It can be called your 'frown lines' or even you '11's'

Why not I hear you ask. This is because it is an incredibly risky area to inject with dermal filler due to to the presence of the supratrochlear arteries. These are directly connected to your ophthalmic arteries which supply your eyes. Not only is this a high risk area for a vascular occlusion (blocked blood vessel) but could potentially end in blindness

Have Threads

Threads are a beauty trend made popular by celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Kendal Jenner. They are a bit like barbed fish wire - it literally hooks into the skin, dragging it backwards. Threads are definitely one of the things I would never do as an aesthetics practitioner as there are a lot of prolems associated with them - alghough they are supposed to be resorbable, scar tissue can encaspsulate around the thread, meaning that it cannot be resorbed fully. They can also cause disfiguation through ripples and adhesions, loss of sensation to the treated area as well as complicating potential future aesthetic treatments.

Go without SPF

The greatest source of extrinsic facial skin ageing is accumulated unprotected exposure to UV rays, with over 80% attributable to low-grade chronic exposure.

There are also specific age-related skin lesions linked to UV radiation, which include basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Intresting fact: Did you know that virtually all caucasians show subclinical sun damage by the age of 15? So, if you invest in cosmetic tweakments but forgo the SPF, you are literally throwing your money away!

Smoke (or Vape!)

Everyone knows the effect that smoking has on your health, but did you know that smoking is guaranteed to make you look older, no matter what arsenal you or your injector throw at it, so giving up could have more of a rejuvenating effect than any toxin, skin booster or filler treatment could ever produce.

Smoking contributes to extrinsic ageing primarily by decreasing capillary blood flow to the skin, whih leads to oxygen and nutrient deprivation in the tissues, as well as causing abnormal growth and development of skin cells.

It is strongly associated with degenerative skin changes found in smokers, which include fewer collagen and elastin fibres as well as an increased incidence of spider veins.

Have Lemon Bottle fat dissolving injections

Lemon bottle is a product imported from Korea, and it is NOT licences for use in the UK. It is 'non-prescription' which means anyone can buy and ANYONE can use it. Interestingly. it is used almost exclusively by non-medic injectors

There are no 'actual' doctors endorsing it, and there are no high level stufies into its safety or efficacy. Injecting this inadvertently into muscles and vessels can cause necrosis and life changing injuries.

Have a non surgical BBL

A BBL involves vast amounts of dermal filler (or fat) being injected into the buttocks to add volume and definition without going to the gym.... or under the knife!

However, 99% of medically qualified injectors DO NOT perform this treatment as they deem it too dangerous! Compoications include gramulomas and lumps, as well as infections, disfigurement and scarring. In some cases stroke or even death can occur!

Not invest in collagen stimulating treatments

As we age, there is an overall loss of collagen and elastin within the skin. Collagen gives strength and support, so as a result the skin loses flexibility, elasticity and volume, becoming less supple, thinner and lax. Visually, you start ot notice a difference in your skin from around the age of 30!

Collagen injection treatments such as microneedling work by encouraging your skin to make more collagen and elastin, resulting in a new collagen-rich tissue that is more even in tone, texture and may also be firmer!
