Why perimenopause should mean microneedling for your skin

Perimenopause (also refered to as the menopause transistion) is when your body starts transitioning to menopause. During this transition, your ovaries begin producing less hormones, causing your mentstrual cycle to become errative or irregular. It may begin as early as your mind-30's or as late as your mid-50's. Some people are in perimenopause for only a short time, but for many, it lasts 4-8 years.

The term perimenopause simply describes the time when your cycles are no longer predictable .

What happens to your hormones during perimenopause?

Perimenopause and menopause are associated with low levels of oestrogen as a consequence of declining ovarian function, and this seismic hormonal shift is associated with dry skin, photo damage, fine lines and wrinkles, and thinning skin.

You get dry skin due to the decline in circulating oestrogen,

Oestrogen promotes hydration by elevating levels of mucopolysaccharides to keep the skin lubricated and moisturised. By promoting the production of hyaluronic acid (which is hydrophilic) within the dermis, this keeps the skin hydrated and maintains skin turgor and fullness. Oestrogen also encourages the productino of epidermal lipids, known as ceramides, that help retain moisture within the skin and maintain a healthy skin barrier.

Why does a decline in Oestrogen cause thinning skin?

This can largely be attributed to reduced collagen syntheses and increased collagen degredation. Evidence shows that up to 30% of dermal collagen may be lost during the first 5 years following the menopause, with collagen content further decreasing by approximately 1-2% each year thereafter.

Why perimenopause should mean microneedling for you skin - How it can help

  • By stimulating collagen and elastin production

  • By replacing declinig hyaluronic acid when used in conjunction with skin boosters

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that is also called 'collagen induction therapy' as it takes advantage of the body's natural healing responses by stimulating collagen production through the creation of micropunctures in the skin using small needles.

How does microneedling work?

Why perimenopause should mean microneedling for your skin is that it works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen! The minature needles cause intentional minor injury to the top layer of the skin which responds by producgin certain groth factors. This in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, resulting iin a new collagne-rich tissue that is more even in tone, texture and is firmer.

Microneedlign can also be combinerd with topical skin boosters which may penetrate mroe deeplyu following treatment, thereby making them more effective.

What are Skin Boosters?

Skin boosters are a soft, gel0like substance which certain hyaluronic acid, which is identical to that found naturally in the skin - and it holds an incredible amount of moisture.

By combinding its use with microneedling, skin boosters provide an instant cumulative hydration, whilst stimnulating collagne production and helping firm the skin from within.

Benefits include

  • A more radiant complexion and healthier skin tone

  • a reduction in visible lines and wrinkles with tighter, lifted skin

  • Better comfort and hydration, giving a dewey glos

  • Firmer texture with more elasticity
